FY2026 COPS Hiring Program (CHP)

The FY2026 COPS Hiring Program (CHP) is a U.S. Department of Justice grant program that provides funding to eligible law enforcement agencies to hire or rehire career sworn law enforcement officers in support of community policing.

Application Process and Deadlines:

  • Submit the SF-424 through Grants.gov by Thursday, July 23, 2026, at 4:59 PM ET.
  • Submit the complete application, including all required attachments, through JustGrants by Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 4:59 PM ET.

Applicants must complete both steps by their respective deadlines for the application to be considered.

Funding:
The FY2026 program makes up to $157.5 million available. Awards generally provide funding for up to 75% of entry-level sworn officer salaries and fringe benefits for three years, with applicants typically responsible for a 25% local cost share, unless a waiver is approved.

Eligibility:
Eligible applicants are limited to established and operational local, state, territorial, and tribal law enforcement agencies that have primary law enforcement authority for the jurisdictions they serve.

Compliance Requirement:
State and local governmental applicants must comply with 8 U.S.C. § 1373, which prohibits state or local government entities from restricting government officials from sending, receiving, maintaining, or exchanging information regarding an individual's citizenship or immigration status with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security or other federal, state, or local government entities.  For more information about the program, click here
